When they make a book they start with the piles of pages you've written, then they make a thing called an Advanced Reading Copy, which is what the book will look like when it's done, except the spelling and grammar hasn't been corrected yet. (Even though your brother-in-charge makes you put the book through the spell check before you turn it in, there are still mistakes! How can that be?)
I don't know why they make this book-before-the-book, but they do. Sometimes the person at the publishing house in charge of doing the covers hasn't decided on the perfect cover just yet, but they stick the one she's working on at the moment on the cover of the Advanced Reading Copy, because it has to have something on the cover, doesn't it? Jupiter and one of my purple Chuck Taylors were always going to be part of the cover. Everybody knew that. And isn't Jupiter being a good ferret-boy? Normally he drags my shoes around by the laces, then hides them under the couch.
